Elder Melvin "Foots" Mitchell

February 16, 1939 - May 9, 2022

Melvin Mitchell, 83, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022, in Miami Vally Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Thorndale, Texas. Officiating pastor will be Apostle Coydell Mitchell. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale. Visitation will be Friday 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Melvin was born in Hoxie, Texas on February 16, 1939 to Curt Sr. and Dorothy Mitchell; he was one of fourteen children. He grew up on a farm in Thorndale and attended school in Thorndale. Melvin met and married the only love of his life Josephine Cook on June 30, 1963 whom he shared 40 years with until her death in 2003. To this union four children were born. In the year of 1973, Melvin dedicated his life to Christ and was called into the ministry under the late Elder Isaac Hughes of Emmanuel Apostolic Temple, San Antonio, Texas. Melvin loved God and reading the word of God. Melvin later pastored Souls Refuge Apostolic Church of Wilmer, Texas. An untimely sickness caused Melvin to relocate from Texas to live with his daughter in Dayton, Ohio. Melvin resided in Dayton, Ohio, until the Lord called him home. He never met a stranger and always greeted you with a smile on his face. Melvin was well loved and respected by many. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Josephine Mitchell; his parents, Curt Sr. and Dorothy Mitchell; sisters, Freddie Jean Jones, Doris Faye Williams, and Daisy Mitchell; brothers, Alvin, Curt Jr., Robert Sr., Milton, Willie, Lonny Morris, Marvin, and David Mitchell. He leaves behind four children to cherish his precious memories, Sharon Williams (Daniel) of Trotwood, OH, Melvin Mitchell Jr, (Meco) of Ceder Hill, TX, Roderick “Shorty” Mitchell (LaNell) of Taylor, TX, and Gwendolyn Mitchell of Fairbanks, AK; grandchildren, Zoe and Kellen Williams, Charles, LaToya and Roderick Jackson, Marcus Moreno and Jordan Smith, D’Neshia Griffin, Le’Nerick and Sharnezia Mitchell and Jacques Washington, Mahogany Mitchell, Dexter Miles and Amanda Scott; great-grandchildren, Tija, Camry, Marcus Jr., Xavier, Isaiah, Rye’kelle, Marlee, Ro’ial, Roderick Jr. and Ryan, Makynzlei, Madyson, Jaylon, Jaden, Kasen, Kamden and Layla, Rayvis (Duece), Zuriel (Ace) and Remintyn, Zia and Beaux and Mila, Audrey, Avarie and Dallas and Londyn. A special son, Michael Daniels; brothers, Calvin Mitchell of Thorndale, TX and Lois Ray Mitchell of Rockdale, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
