Funeral services for Johnnie Mae Mathis, 87 of Burton, are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at the Burton Community Center in Burton. Burial will follow in the Flat Prairie Cemetery near Burton. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Due to concerns with COVID-19, the family requests that people attending the visitation and service to wear a face mask. On February 12, 1934 John and Carrie (McCain) Taplin were blessed with a beautiful daughter and which they named her Johnnie Mae Taplin. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at St. John Baptist Church in Burton, Texas and later became a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Burton, Texas where she was a faithful member and youth choir sponsor. Johnnie Mae later met and married her soulmate, Roy Mathis Sr., and together they had elven beautiful children who they named Gloria Mathis, Dorothy Mathis, Ernest Mathis Sr., Ernestine Mathis, Roy Mathis Jr., Marvin Mathis, Fannie Mathis, Lyndon Mathis, Tammy Mathis, Sandra Mathis, and Ronald Mathis. Johnnie Mae enjoyed cooking, singing gospel, and making quilts. She also enjoyed gardening and taking care of her family farm where she raised cows, hogs, chickens, and horses. Johnnie Mae cherished her family and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. God called Johnnie Mae home on December 22, 2021 at High Hope Care Center in Brenham, Texas where she was surrounded by her family. She is proceeded in death by her parents, John and Carrie Taplin; her Husband, Roy Mathis Sr.; two sons, Ernest Mathis Sr. and Ronald Mathis; one daughter, Gloria Mathis; two brothers, Henry Mitchell and LeeBoy (Bose) Taplin; four sisters, Lolly Mae Mathis, Catharine Williams, Gertrude Mathis, and Annie Mae Taplin; two grandsons, Antonio Mathis and Roderick Mathis; one granddaughter, Sharona Parker; two sons-in-law, Sammy Hudgen Sr. and Douglas Wilson, and two daughters-in-law, Denice Mathis and Stephanie Mathis. Johnnie Mae leaves to cherish her memories her eight children, Dorothy (Bobby) Esters of Dime Box, Ernestine (Rev. Eddie) Mays of Bellville, Roy Jr. (Nicole) Mathis of Franklin, Marvin Mathis of Burton, Fannie (Jay) Parker of Burton, Lyndon (Angela) Mathis of Temple, Tammie Mathis of Burton, and Sandra Mathis of Somerville; two sisters, Caroline Mathis of Burton and Florence (Sylvester Sr.) Hudgen of Burton; brother, Floyd Taplin Sr. of Burton; one daughter-in-law, Marie Mathis of Huntsville, 34 grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Honoring Johnnie Mae by serving as bearers of her casket will be James Mathis, Sylvester Hudgen, Ernest Mathis Jr., Roy Mathis III, Billy Mathis Jr., and James “Doughboy” Mathis. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
