Graveside services for Gerard Menge, 80 of Ledbetter, Texas, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 in the Ledbetter Cemetery in Ledbetter. Military honors will be provided by the Giddings American Legion York Post 276. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Gerard Bernard Menge was born on June 16, 1941 in Charleston, West Virginia to Edward Menge Sr. and Helen (Merrick) Menge. He graduated from Franklin Heights High School in Columbus, Ohio. Gerard joined the US Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he received his Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Texas. Gerard served as the Ledbetter Postmaster for 47 years. When the town mail carrier was sick, he would ride his bike or roller-skate around town to deliver mail. Gerard loved his community and served on the Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department, helped Jay Jervis create the Ledbetter Lane of Lights, and participated in many local barbeque cook offs. Over the years he also served in the Lion’s Club. Gerard was a collector of stamps and coins and was a member of several stamp societies. He also enjoyed traveling and would visit his adopted families in Germany and Australia. Gerard passed away the afternoon of Friday, April 8, 2022 at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Sr. and Helen Menge, and his brother, Edward Menge Jr. Gerard is survived by his adopted family, Antje & Nigel Robson of Australia, Joern Hufeland of Germany, Axel Hufeland of Germany, Ingrid Hufeland of Germany, Doug & Lois Cox of Colorado, and Debbi & Lance Gerbert of Ledbetter. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or to the charity of one’s choice.
